About us.
The Geoheritage Division of the GSSA exists to recognise, protect, and promote South Africa's geological treasures as part of the nation's natural and cultural heritage. It provides a professional platform for documenting significant geosites, guiding their conservation, and raising public awareness of their scientific, educational, and tourism value. By doing so, the Division helps ensure that South Africa's unique geological record is safeguarded and meaningfully shared with current and future generations.
The current Chair of the Division is Dr Khodani Matshusa, a leading South African expert in geoheritage and geotourism. His work spans more than 15 years across research, academia, mining and consulting, with a strong focus on transforming South Africa's 6 ,000 abandoned mining sites into opportunities for environmental restoration, community upliftment and sustainable geotourism.
