University of Venda Student Branch (UniVen)

The Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) University of Venda Branch is a student-driven platform dedicated to empowering students in Hydrology and Water Resources (HWR) and Mining and Environmental Geology (MEG). Guided by a commitment to academic excellence, professional development, industry exposure, leadership, and meaningful collaboration, the Branch creates opportunities for students to connect academic knowledge with real-world practice. Through initiatives that foster learning, networking, mentorship, and practical experience, the GSSA UNIVEN Branch strives to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional networks needed to confidently pursue careers and make a meaningful contribution to the Earth sciences.

The Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) UNIVEN Branch is a student-led platform advancing geological and earth sciences through academic engagement, professional development, leadership, research, and industry exposure.

The Branch bridges classroom knowledge with real-world application through fieldwork, mine visits, workshops, and mentorship programmes, encouraging students to explore diverse career pathways in geology, mining, environmental sciences, and related Earth science disciplines.

We promote geoheritage awareness, environmental stewardship, innovation, and responsible resource development. Through collaboration with industry professionals, academics, and institutions, the GSSA UNIVEN Branch is building a knowledgeable, connected, and professionally prepared generation of Earth scientists.

For the 2026 academic year, the Branch is led by Mr. Mokie Mokgotho (Chairperson).
