Heartbreak for Geologists in California Town

NPR and theLos Angeles Times report that a snapshot of the earth’s shifting tectonic plates,an accidental experiment, was destroyedinthe town of Hayward, California, when a city crew decided to do what they are supposed to do — fixing streets — and destroyed a wonderful curbside laboratory for studying earthquakes.

The curb in Hayward, shown in March 2006, has changed over the years. For decades it moved about 4 millimeters per year.
